EHS Door Sign Generator

Door sign example
Example door sign.

Summary

Door signs inform entrants of hazards, proper PPE required for entry, and emergency contact information. Signs convey information to VT personnel, emergency responders, contractors, and visitors. PIs or their designee are responsible for updating their emergency contact and hazard information annually

Laboratories can create their own door sign using the EHS Door Sign Generator.

Components

Components of an informative door sign include:

  • Hazards present (e.g. biological, chemical, high energy electrical systems, non-ionizing radiation. radiological)
  • Principal Investigator (PI) and emergency contact information (both daytime and after-hours)
  • Secondary contact (someone affiliated with the space that could answer questions should the PI be unable to be reached) and emergency contact information (both daytime and after-hours)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) or other safety precautions required for entry

Helpful tips

  • Evaluate the hazards to determine which pictograms should be selected.
  • Include current contact information and provide a phone number that is continuously monitored for emergencies. Please note that office phone number do not suffice for an after-hours emergency contact. A daytime contact number (office or lab phone) and an after-hours number (home or cell phone) should be listed.
  • Install signs at eye level and place directly beneath the room number sign in a plexiglass frame (available from EHS).
