Animal Biosafety

Virginia Tech's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is the oversight body that approves and monitors the humane care of vertebrate, research animals. Visit the IACUC website for information on policies, laws and regulations related to research with animals, protocol submission and management, training, news and announcements.

Animal research involving recombinant material, genetically modified animals, or infectious agents falls within the purview of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Protocols for research projects of this type must be individually approved by the IBC and IACUC before research can begin.

For more information on worker safety when working with animals, please visit our Occupational Safety and Health for Animal Handlers page.
