Welding and Cutting Safety

General welding and cutting safety training is available online for anyone performing welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering activities.

Hot Work Permit Coordinator

The supervisor and any designees must complete Hot Work Permit Coordinator training, available online, for any open-flame operations being conducted by the department/lab/group.

Other Relevant Trainings

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Awareness is required for all personnel performing welding/cutting/brazing/soldering operations.
  • Hazard Communication Right-to-Know is required for all personnel performing welding/cutting/brazing/soldering operations.
  • Lockout/tagout Authorized Person level training is required if systems being welded/cut are part of a system which must be de-energized prior to operations beginning.
  • Confined Space Entrant/Attendant/Supervisor level training is required if welding/cutting operations will be performed in a confined space.
  • Lead Awareness training is recommended for personnel performing soldering operations where leaded solder is being used, or where leaded paint will be disturbed.
  • Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety training should be completed if welding gasses are present.
  • Electrical Awareness training is recommeded for basic electrical hazard identification and controls.
